Don't worry about character disparity.This skips all the outbreak stuff and gets right to survival, which is what you came here for. Make a few other survivors as back ups when your players get eaten, and off they go to find food. Now zombies are everywhere and they are out of food, but they have a small community to fall back on. The easiest way to start the game is to tell the players the outbreak happened, and they were lucky enough to hide and wait out the worst of it.Use a random roll generated character if possible. This is not about adventure, it's about survival. Regardless of the system, you usually have some kind of "commoner" archetype, make sure you are using that.
